There are several factors that must be considered before making this comparison between Illinois and California. First is Illinois’ long-standing history of political gameplay, which always gets in the way of real reform, second is how Illinois deals with their debts – by running away, and third is Illinois’ heritage of criminal activity, as evidenced by how many once-elected officials are currently in prison. Once those factors have been layered in, it isn’t surprising that Illinois has the worst credit rating in the nation, a looming pension crisis, and no foreseeable way out.
